I only use black sunflower seed and I've never seen a House Sparrow on any
of my feeders. I thought they were strictly ground feeders. I should think
removing the perches from tube feeders would also limit desirable birds.

Re: Aphid eaters. House Sparrows may eat the occasional aphid; but they're
not anywhere near as effective as Bush Tits. A flock of 30 or more vacuums
my yard every day or so. Unfortunately I think the flock is breaking up for
nesting.
