Clarence - You might just check in with USF&W and make sure that the
hatchery has cleared it with them (unfortunately, sometimes they
have given permission) and see if anyone has investigated using
non-lethal methods, like nets. It is both absurd and maddening that
native wildlife needs to be killed in order to raise fish for sport
fishing! Louise

Subject: RR: Death update

Greetings,
I was back at the hatchery today and talked for a bit with
someone in charge there. The hatchery manager got quite hot
under the collar and went to talk to the Dept. of Ag. shooter. Of
course I just had to follow. The shooter in question decided on his
own that the loon looked injured and not knowing what else to do decided
to just put the bird out of it's suffering. Yea, sure; you betcha!
Bottem line; the manager made sure the fed. fella understood that loons,
ospreys, and eagles were strictly off limites as far as shotguns were
concerned.
Just thought you might like to know.

Clarence.

P.S. It was comforting to hear that I wasen't the only one out there
in cyberspace who got a little upset over the loon. I don't quite feel
so out of touch.

Thanks.
