Hi,

I have also received my materials, and am in the process of selecting my
sites. I have identified 8, all within a reasonable distance of my house in
Puyallup. they are city park, private park or Audubon reserve, state park
or private land that I know very well. I am chosing on two criteria:
(1) I am familiar with the commute and time restraints so that I think I can
realistically cover them, and I know the area really well. I think the Lab
also wants continuity, so I am fairly confident that the areas are not going
to change drastically for some years. Even if you don't go back next year, I
think they would like to be able to assign another volunteer the site, so
that we can get consecutive years of coverage.
(2) I can get the relevant maps and aerial photos to calculate the
landscape percent of forest with some accuracy. Predicting what will be
logged, even this summer, can be tough. I would suggest you try to lump your
sites so that they are not too far apart for both these reasons.
I will probably not get many birds, as I think they breed at higher
elevations than I am working at. THe highest site will be near Elbe. So I
would be very interested in your results, and glad to keep in touch, and be
any help I can.
