Subject: Columbia Estuary Report - 4/13/97

A male CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD was working the Salmonberrys behind Astoria
High School on Friday, 4-11.

Three BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLERS were on the bike path near Battery Russell.
The COMMON YELLOWTHROAT density is very high now and the ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLER is on the decline toward territorial birds only.

The Hwy 101 OSPREYS are actively courting.

12 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 2 LESSER YELLOWLEGS and 9 WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were on
Wireless Rd today. A GLAUCOUS GULL was on Clatsop Beach. Among the dead were
1 Common Loon, 1 Surf Scoter, 3 White-winged Scoters, a Common Murre and a
California Sealion.
There were no shorebirds found in the 5.5km beach transect

A kettle of 8 TURKEY VULTURES were on the move through the Chinook Valley,
but shorebirds numbers in Baker Bay are as dismal as they are on the Oregon
side.
