My 9 year old son and I made a quick trip to Lower Crab Creek and part of
Columbia National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday evening
when we opened the car doors at our chosen camping site, we were greeted by
a very vocal American Bittern, who carried on until dark. A snipe was
winnowing overhead until dark and sora and Virginia rail were calling
simultaneously. A great horned owl was hooting in the distance, and as we
were falling asleep coyotes and frogs serenaded us and cranes flew over. A
great father-son experience... Next morning broken-wing killdeer display
and great views of a singing canyon wren. 56 species without trying
hard.
