Thanks to all of you who responded to my plea for help. I posted the same
request on the alt.rec.birds newsgroup and got no replys.

After an email reply from "hikerhess" who suggested Northern Saw-Whet Owl,
I looked in a reprinted article I had entitled "Identification of Montana's
Owls" which is reprinted from Montana Outdoors (March/April 1990). There
are pictures and great descriptions of all their owls including the
Saw-Whet. Their description of, "A monotonous 'toot-toot-toot...' throught
the night" describes the call perfectly (much as I did, I might add) I
feel 95% sure that this is what I hear (again last night). I also hear
Great Horned Owls here on occasion and I wasn't sure whether these two owl
species co-exist in the same territory.

Thanks again,
Byron H
