about two weeks ago, I noticed that the traffic (rufous) at my hummingbird
feeder had dropped considerably. This coincided roughly with someone
posting that they had a hummer sitting on her nest, so I assumed that the
females were not coming as often because they were sitting. However, I
twice observed a male hummer diligently working the blooms of a big leaf
maple. Now, the maples have lost their blooms, and the traffic has resumed
to about its old pace at the feeder. So, were the birds not visting as
often because they had an alternative food source? Or are the females now
feeding nestlings? Both? Do they feed nestlings nectar, or bugs? Thanks for
your thoughts.
