Columbia Estuary Report - 4/20/97

The sparrow movement began to crank up this week. A LINCOLN SPARROW was in
my backyard. GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS are everywhere.
A VESPER SPARROW was among the SAVANNA SPARROWS at Wireless Rd.

Six WHIMBREL and two BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER were at Wireless Rd along with good
numbers of GREATER YELLOWLEGS, DUNLIN, WESTERN SANDPIPERS and LEAST SANDPIPERS.

A MARBLED GODWIT and 5 SEMIPALMATED PLOVER were on Clatsop Beach during the
weekly transect run. SANDERLING, DUNLIN and WESTERN SANDPIPER numbers are
building toward the expected second wave peak in the first week of May.

Five WILSON'S WARBLERS and a HERMIT WARBLER were found on the monthly Ft.
Columbia census on the Washington side of the river.

There are plenty of wildflowers blooming at Ft Columbia now as well, including:
Hooker's Fairybells
Western Trillium
Candy Flower
Spring Beauty
Bittercress
Wood Violet
Clarkia
Tall Larkspur

Wildflower purists who expect Latin, will have to find someone more with it
than me.
