I have struggled with this concern as an elementary teacher. Last spring I
discovered a Bushtit nest being actively and openly used by a nesting pair.
It was along a wooded trail on school grounds. I wanted to share it with my
student naturalists but was concerned word would get out and the nest would
be destroyed. I swore my students to secrecy about its location and showed
it to them. The nest stayed intact, although I'm not sure if the pair of
Bushtits were successful in raising young, but the nest appeared to survive
intact.

The nest was located right next to the trail, so there may have been too
much activity for raising young even if nobody purposely disturbed it.
