I too actively list and twitch (as my wife and dog would attest after
dragging them out in Saturday's weather to get the Hooded Oriole near
Tillamook), but also engage in other activities as well. I think one
of the big problems with the Madera Canyon Nightjars is that most feel
(and ABA rules encourage) that you have to see the bird to count it.
On any other type of count, hearing the bird is sufficient--perhaps
more people should start applying this to the life list as well. One
can sit on the road at Florida Wash and hear a Nightjar and enjoy.

All of us have to realize that stupid actions ruin the event for the
next person, regardless of our status as lister, environmentalist,
geek, mother's somewhat strange new boyfriend, atlaser, surveyor, etc.
The ABA Code of Ethics is a good list of rules which should be followed
at all times. RK
