Hi folks,
Thought perhaps some enterprising young-at-heart birder might be =
interested in the following note that I saw on the Seabird-L list. What =
a great opportunity to do some hard-core pelagic birding....

WANTED!
VOLUNTEER OBSERVERS=20
Notice to all Seabird 1 and birdbycatch subscribers
New regulations in the North Pacific longlining fleet to minimize bird=20
bycatch are now in effect. Assessing their efficacy and learning more=20
about fishermen/bird interactions is essential for sound management=20
decisions regarding this problem.
To this end, the Seabird Bycatch Project is trying to place qualified=20
observers on a variety of longliners from now until early autumn so that =
as much relevant data as possible can be gathered.=20
Applicants should have on board experience and not be prone to=20
seasickness. Ideally, we will be able to attract trained observers able=20
to provide valid information about seabird interactions and the effect=20
of various seabird avoidance techniques used throughout the fleet and=20
the season.=20
At this stage we are able to provide only room and board while on=20
assignment, although anybody coming through Seattle is certainly welcome =
to free housing here too.=20
If you are interested in participating, please briefly sketch your=20
experience and interest and specify your availability. Keep this=20
information to one page, and send it to ericdoit at oz.net.
Notice also the message to follow from the skipper of the 70' longliner=20
"Masonic." Mark Lundsten still has a couple of observer spots left in=20
the next few months. Contact him directly, but please cc me so that I=20
can monitor and redirect if necessary. I will try to put together=20
volunteers with skippers.
Thank you,
Eric Swenson

This message should apply to Nigel Brothers too. Please try to make
that happen if you can, Eric. I have not contacted him and hope that
you can pass this on for me. Thanks. Mark

I have no one scheduled yet for the 3 trips from mid-May - early-June
or for the one trip in mid-July. I do have an enthusiastic federal
observer lined up for now until about May 12 and another for early
July. Vivian Mendenhall at FWS is drafting a data collection sheet for
us as a pilot program. I hope someone besides the fed observers gets
to use it. Please contact my wife Teru if you're still interested. I
fly out this morning but am accessible by satellite coms.
