the Ecola Point,Ecola State Park, Clatsop Co., OR
1 Aug 1997 - 0915 to 1015

Weather: sunny
Wind west at 5-10mph; Temp 65F

Method: One hour (timed) station count from observation deck at Ecola
Point using 20x60 Bushnell spotting scope and 8x50 Bushnell
binoculars. Birds were sorted as to flyby, sitting rocks, sitting
on ocean.

NOTES: I counted about 3000 COMMON MURRES on the water at the beginning
of the hour, but by the end there were only about 1200. Presumably many
of the subsequent flyby birds were these. A single group of 9 ELEGANT
TERNS flew by close to shore at about 0930hr. The TUFTED PUFFIN was
flying south at about 1000hr. I saw or hear _no_ murre chicks in the
observation period.
