We had five people on our monthly trip to Spencer Is. today, Tues., on a hot
day. We birded the south loop from 0955-1400. But there was a slight breeze
and with low humidity it was very tolerable. We had a total of 39 species.
There was a high tide so there weren't many mudflats showing which probably
kept the shorebird count down. The highlights were:

1 immature Black-crowned Night-Heron. It was perched about 20' up in a tree
south
of the dirt road to the island and about 1/2 way from parking lot to
island.
7 Greater Yellowlegs
2 Lesser Yellowlegs
8 Killdeer
1 Spotted Sandpiper
1 Long-billed Dowitcher
10 Common Snipe
2 Belted Kingfisher - one demonstrating its hovering and diving capability
three times.
3 Western Wood-Peewee
6 Willow Flycatcher
1 Eastern Kingbird
1 No. Harrier - the only raptor we saw
