Columbia Estuary Report - 8/15/97

RAVENS are now beginning to move out of the Coast Range and on
to the beaches. Accipiters have also been seen with increased
frequency over the last week.

GREAT EGRETS are well distributed with one on the Necannicum R.,
one on the Lewis & Clark R and at least two on Baker Bay (WA).

A BONAPART'S GULL was with the gulls and terns on the Necannicum
River Saturday. 86 ELEGANT TERNS and a LONG-BILLED CURLEW were
there today.

Shorebird numbers in the area are nothing to sing about, but all
the expected species can be found with moderate effort. The
SOOTY SHEARWATER movement is developing nicely. Many other
expected species are beginning there fall movements.

An ORCA was working just outside the breaker line at the SJCR
on Wednesday.
