Columbia Estuary Report - 8/18/97

A quick look at my Clatsop Beach tide table leads me to predict
that this will be the best week of the season for fall shorebirds
at the South Jetty of the Columbia. The next set of well placed
reasonably high tides won't be 'til end of September.

Today's high tide was at 1332hrs. Cindy Lawes and I spent about
2 hours (she was actually their longer) with the following results:

Semipalmated Plover - 4
Black Turnstone - 3
Greater Yellowlegs (juv) - 1
Lesser Yellowlegs (all juv's) - 3
PECTORAL SANDPIPER (adult female) - 1
BAIRD'S SANDPIPER (juv) - 1
Semipalmated Sandpiper (juv) - 1
Western Sandpiper - 75
Least Sandpiper - 1
WILSON'S PHALAROPE (juv's) - 2

We briefly considered calling the phalaropes marsh sandpipers,
but thought better of it.
