In two recent posts, Joan MacDonald & Bill Ward write of cowbird brood
parasitism on juncos. At Iona this summer I observed a female Red-winged
Blackbird, an unlikely host species, feeding a juv cowbird at the Iona
settling ponds in the last week of July and the first week of August. Both
White-crowned and Savannah Sparrows on Sea Island have also hosted cowbird
young this summer (more white-crowns, it seems, than Savannahs on personal
observations while cycling along Grauer and Ferguson Roads). A large (~60)
pure flock of juv-only Brown-headed Cowbirds has been steadily massing over
the last couple of weeks on the Vancouver International Airport fence
between Shannon Road and the S end of the Iona Causeway. A small meteorite
should do it, he thought wistfully--.
