Joyce Meyer and I did the last of the monthly surveys of the valley which
started last Sept. So we have completed a year. We only had 34 species this
time but we did get two new birds - Cooper's Hawk and Hairy Woodpecker.
There were hundreds of Barn Swallows and Violet-green Swallows, mostly
juveniles. Sightings of interest that were the first since last spring
included two American Coot, eight Wood Duck, four No. Pintail, and two
Greater Yellowlegs. We saw nine Red-tailed Hawk and one mature Bald Eagle
that had its shoulders squared and wings spread to dry in the sun. We saw a
total of eight Turkey Vultures at three locations. Four Common Yellowthroat
were still around. Five Mourning Dove, the first since Feb., were back at
the overlook at the south end of the Carnation Farm pastures.
