This is the Lower Columbia Basin Audubon Society Bird Alert for July 23,
1997. For any questions regarding LCBAS call Mike Lilga at 946-8966.

To skip the message, push the star button on your phone and give your name,
phone number, and sightings after the tone.

Shorebirds still account for most of the sightings but the movement of
passerines is picking up.

On August 12, the Yakima Delta yielded among the more common shorebirds, 2
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS and an immature BONAPARTE'S GULL. On August 16, 2
BONAPARTE'S GULLS were present.

A HOUSE WREN made the Lilga's Richland yard list on August 17.

Also on August 17, Dennis Rockwell found AMERICAN AVOCETS, both YELLOWLEGS,
LEAST SANDPIPERS, and 8 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES at the Yakima Delta.

To Dennis' list, my son and I (Bob Woodley) added a SOLITARY SANDPIPER, plus
2 BAIRD'S, 9 PECTORAL and 6 STILT SANDPIPERS.

In Two Rivers Park on August 19, Dennis Rockwell found an unusual 5 SOLITARY
SANDPIPERS plus 2 VIRGINIA RAILS, both Yellowlegs, and SPOTTED SANDPIPERS.

Phil Bartley reported 2 STILT SANDPIPERS and 22 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES among
the more common species on the Yakima Delta on August 19. On the following
day, Phil found ORANGE-CROWNED, NASHVILLE, YELLOW, and WILSON'S WARBLERS on
Bateman Island and had similar species there on the 21.

Also on August 21, Nancy LaFramboise and I birding on the Columbia Point
side of the Yakima Delta observed a GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL, DOWNY WOODPECKERS,
HOUSE WRENS, and ORANGE-CROWNED, NASHVILLE, and YELLOW WARBLERS among other
bird species.

On August 22, Mike Denny reported no unusual shorebirds on the Walla Walla
Delta (yet!) but an early PRAIRIE FLACON along Byrnes Road just west of
Touchet and Yellowlegs and SOLITARY SANDPIPERS in a flooded field along
McDole Road off Byrnes Road.

Lastly, during the past week I've had BLACK-CHINNED, RUFOUS, and CALLIOPE
HUMMINGBIRDS at my feeders plus a PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER, a WESTERN
WOOD-PEWEE, a WARBLING VIREO and WILSON'S WARBLER in my yard.

Thus it is readily apparent that the southbound migration is underway.
To report your own sightings, please give your name, phone number and
sightings after the tone. Thank you.
