Millions of us got the 's habit from Strunk and White's Elements
of Style, the tiny book handed out to freshmen for decades.

This little tract had *very* strong things to say on the subject.

One felt that E. B. White's ghost would pronounce 'Dope!' every
time one used "the Jones'" -- or some such.

And the ghost would always be there, watching.
