Shrikers: the winter 1997 issue (Vol 11 No 1) of Birdscope put out by
Cornell Ornithology Lab has an excellent I.D. help for differentiating
between Loggerhead & Northern on page 3. To quote: "NS have noticeable
barring on their underparts, and their masks are narrower and don't
extend above their eyes, as do the masks of LS.
The broad black mask of a LS also extends thinly across the top of its
bill in birds of all ages, which helps to distinguish an immature LS
(which also has light barring underneath) from a NS." Hans
