I believe it is verry possible to encounter Loggerhead Shrikes in E WA in
the winter, especially around areas associated with native sage. I have
encountered this species at least once during the winter for the last 3
years( Dec.-Feb. sightings) with 2 records from Douglas Co. in the Foster
Creek area above
Bridgeport, and 1 record in Grant Co.near Coulee City.I have observed
Northern Shrikes in similar habitat also, but I tend to believe that
Loggerhead Shrikes would stray to far from native sage, which
is the habitat in which the tend to favor also during breeding. Any shrike
encountered in E WA during late fall through the winter should be checked
over as mentioned before on TWEETERS,especially if the are adults and in
the appropriate habitat.
