I haven't been to American Lake this year, but I've seen the Little Gulls
that have wintered there in past years, and I didn't have much difficulty
finding and observing them. In the past, the gulls have stayed down at
the south end of the lake. My suggestion is to go into Camp Murray
(entrance just as you come off I-5) and ask for a map and directions to
their boat house at the south end of the lake. (I've found the guards
there quite pleasant when they find out what you want.) You can park on
the high ground by the boat house, then walk down to the shore with your
scope or else walk through the woods to the shore at a different point to
the west of the boat house, where you may be able to get closer to the
gulls and get a better view.
