Kelly, if you look at slopes in the dry country you'll see that there are
many parallel grooves on the hillsides. These are trails left by the comings
and goings of the Side-hill Gouger. Now, scientists will try to tell you
that these aren't really trails but some effect of gravitational soil
sorting--hah! what a bunch of hooey--but the *truth* is that there's a
critter that comes out only at night that walks back and forth along these
hills upon god knows what business of its own, leaving these trails.
No-one's ever had a really good look at it 'cause it's *really* shy, but
they say that the legs on the critter's uphill side are way shorter than the
legs on the downhill side. And that, and the trails it leaves, is about all
anyone really knows about the Side-hill Gouger. They've got to be common: in
the dry country, their trails are everywhere.
