The Peregrine thread reminded me of an article about predator studies East
Africa. A number of Wildebeast were marked with a white dye. Within a very
short time a disproportionate number of them had become prey for Lion and
Hyena, depite being healthy and vigorous in all other respects. Perhaps
the distinctiveness and rarity of the Cuckoos and Sabine's Gulls realitive
to the "bird background noise" increases their probability of becoming
prey. Certainly distinctive flight characteristics might single them out as
well.
