Hi Folks
There is another park by the same name in Oregon just east of Troutdale
(where I-84 crosses the Sandy River) and its attraction is an Emperor Goose
that cohabits with a loose group of a half dozen mallards. This bird has
been there for a few years but it took me three empty-handed visits to
finally tick it off my list this past Saturday. Beautiful bird.
Especially when you are within 20 feet! (Directions for us were: If
heading east on I-84, take the Lewis and Clark SP off ramp -immediately
after passing through Troutadale and crossing the bridge over the Sandy
River. At the Stop sign go left, you will see a parking area on the left
with restrooms while on the right is a boat launching ramp. Look in this
area. The Emperor Goose was hauled out on the far bank with the Mallards.
The bank is below a RV/trailer park and we chatted with a fellow there who
has seen it for quite awhile including offering the comment that it had
been 'surrogate father to a mallard litter'.)
We then went South a bit more on a Wild Swan Chase without any glory. The
Whooper was not showing and has not been reported for a few days but there
was small groups of Tundras at Airlie, Maple Grove and Baskett Slough. We
ran into a very friendly Paul Sullivan at Baskett Slough and he told us of
a Burrowing Owl report from close by so we tried for it with no success.
Baskett Slough has at least one partially leucistic Canada Goose and a
critical mass of Wigeon without a Eurasian being present!
Good trip, too much for a day but that is what you have to do sometimes.
