It may be CBC time now, but mark April 25 on your calendars. The first
Grays Harbor Bird Race is that day as part of the Shorebird Festival. Also
known as a "big day" this event will cover Grays Harbor County from
McCleary to Wynoochee Dam to Taholah to Grayland and all the points in
between.

Grays Harbor Co. is bigger than Rhode Island and only 20 sq. miles smaller
than Delaware. Still it is only the 14th largest county in Washington.
While you may think big days need to cover vast distances to pick up great
variety, the bird possibilities in GHCo. range from the seabirds of
Westport to Chipping Sparrows in the prairies of Oakville.

How many can be found in late April? A run through the county this past
April 30 tallied 124. And this was on a day with 40 mph winds and plenty
of rain. The potential is much greater with good weather patterns,
perhaps upwards of 150!

But don't let the prospect of a rain squall stop you. Talk to your birding
buddies, form a team of 2-4, and start scouting the county for hidden gems.
