SWANS SHOT: A 12/18 US Fish and Wildlife Service press release
reported five protected trumpeter swans have been shot in Illinois in
the past three weeks. FWS Special Agent Timothy Santel said, "[E]very
year, trumpeters are killed by hunters claiming they mistake them for
other birds. The bottom line is, if a trumpeter is close enough to
shoot at and kill, it's close enough for the shooter to know what it
is. We will pursue all cases in which a trumpeter has been shot."
Trumpeters are considerably larger than other water fowl, weighing up
to 38 pound and with a wingspan of eight feet. By comparison, a Canada
geese weighs 12 pounds.
