The comment about bored solders shooting wildlife brought to mind an event
that took place on New Guinea in 1943 during WWII.

I was an infantry unit officer in the 127 Inf Rgt 32nd div--joined L company
in the Philippines and part of my informal indoctrination by my troops was
listening all the events that took place during New guinea combant. I guess
this was thought to be helpful preparation for me for coming activities.
The event occurred somewhere west of Hollandia. A GI shot a Mouse Deer
for eating. There were lots of southern farm boys in the company so poaching
was a way of life . Shortly after that the company went on line ( combant )
and while actually fighting a Australian Game Warden worked his way foreward
and arrested the guilty GI for killing a protected species. Prior to combat
in this area the troops had been briefed to not shoot these deer under any
circumstance. The GI was fined and docked several hundred $$$'s. Of course
this took him out the line for several days which according to him was worth
it. Mouse Deer are about the size of jackrabbits. WHL
