Sharp-shinned hawks tend to have squarly notched tails, whereas Coopers
hawks tails are generally much more rounded. Size is also an important
factor, but sometimes the size of certain individuals makes this somewhat
unreliable. Check out the book Advanced Birding from the library. I
forget the author, but I think it is Ken Kaufmen (Perhaps someone in
Tweeterland could correct me if I am wrong). It is in the Peterson
series.
