Greetings, fellow bird watchers. Here are the numbers for the last bird =
count on Green Lake, Seattle, this 31 December 1997.
Overcast, some drizzle, typical Seattle winter weather.
Last Saturday we did the lake as part of the Seattle CBC. We had a few =
more Hooded Mergansers then, fewer small songbirds and no woodpeckers at =
all.
As mentioned in postings last week, small fish (thousands) are gathered =
along the NW shoreline, especially in the reeds where the Red-winged =
Blackbirds nest. This attracts fish eating species like mergansers, =
cormorants, some of the grebes and herons. The eagles seem to =
concentrate on the bigger fish out in the lake. There are two adult =
eagles and one sub-adult on the lake, regularly, but as you saw in the =
Seattle CBC results Hal Opperman posted the other day, there are some =
many (40+) eagles in town. It's difficult to say where these birds are =
from (some people have speculated the birds on Green Lake may be from =
Discovery Park, they may well be, on the other hand...). With enough =
study/ observation I am convinced one can recognize individual birds; I =
haven't spent enough time this past year to be able to do that with =
these birds.=20
For some reason it's slim pickings with the gulls the past few weeks. =
Last Saturday and this morning the usually crowded platform near the =
Bathhouse Theater was deserted. No dead gulls lying around to explain =
reluctance to use the platform. Perhaps they've found "greener pastures" =
elsewhere.
