There's been a Common Loon at the locks my last three visits. Last
saturday it was in the large lock chamber, with both gates closed, monday
it was just west of the large lock and this morning it was in the
spillway area. The ranger said it seems to prefer being in the large
lock, so this is a good chance to see a loon up close for those of us who
rarely get out of Seattle.
Other sights:
Red-necked Grebe, 4
Horned Grebe, 2
Barrows Goldeneye, ~30 (Almost twice the usual number)
Red Breasted Merganser, ~30 (They're really pairing up, it must be almost
spring)
Double Crested Comorant ~10
California Gull, 1
Belted Kingfisher, 1
Lots of Glaucous-winged gulls, Canada Geese, Wigeons, Mallards, Coots,
Cedar Waxwing, ~40 (Mostly in the deciduous tree just inside the
employees parking lot next to
the main gate)
American Goldfinch, ~20 (In the red bushes next to the little beach on
the Magnolia side.)
Varied Thrush, 1
Crows, Robins, Starlings, etc.
There was also an odd looking goose in with the Canadas, pink feet, paler
pink bill, rusty breast blending to an almost pinkish white body. A
domestic hybrid I guess.
