A week or so ago, Alan Richards wrote about a friend of his putting out D-Con
for the rodents that were attracted to her outdoor pigeon facility. He wondered
if predators eating the rodents (who had eaten the D-Con) would be affected. I
posted that message to the WLREHAB mailing list to see if any wildlife
rehabilitators had info on this. (Alan, I apologize for not asking your
permission to do this, it just occurred to me now.) Anyway, this response just

Subject: Re: AVIAN: D-CON AND RAPTORS

Secondary poisoning of raptors with anticoagulants appears to be a growing
problem. Our Center (Hudson Valley Raptor Center) has had several cases.
The newer anticoagulant rodenticides are far more toxic than the older
variety like Warfarin. It doesn't take much to cause fatal hemmorrhaging.
These products contain substances like Diphacinone, Brodifacoum and
Bromadiolone and are sold under the names of Havoc, Talon, Volid and others.

It is extremely important to document these cases, (and educate the public
about the continuing threat of poisons in the environment) as it can lead to
restrictions on the use of unnecessarily hazardous pesticides. Ward Stone,
New York State's Wildlife Pathologist is an excellent source of help and
information. He can be reached at the Wildlife Pathology Lab in Delmar, New
York (518) 439-8017.
