Tweeters,

Thanks for the posted locations for Pileated Woodpeckers in the greater
Seattle area (Discovery Park, Upper Golden Gardens, Seward Park, and, of
course the Washington Park Arboretum). I suppose that all of these areas
have fairly large stands of natural forest that are not subject to the
methodical purging of snags that Kelly Cassidy mentioned. Like the bald
eagles nesting in the Seattle area, the various forested parks are providing
for Pileated Woodpeckers. Fortunately, there were far-sighted
conservation-oriented types around many decades ago to help secure some of
these areas so they might remain semi-natural while everthing else has gone
a different direction.
