Please, say it ain't so! Has one of my favorite bird names been sacrificed
in the name of political correctness? (By the way, I am part Native
American, so I guess that makes me an "old squaw". I have alway thought the
name "oldsquaw" to be one of the best & most original Sort of like
"yellowhammer" for the northern flicker. My 1991 edition of The Audubon
Society Encyclopedia of North American Birds lists "long-tailed duck" as one
of the "other" names for oldsquaw. My 1996 edition of the A.B.A. checklist
still lists Clangula hyemalis as oldsquaw.
