you might be interested to learn that pileated wp's will feed on blue
elderberries during early fall. i have several slides of this. the adult
bird finds it difficult to remain upright while picking individual berries
from the cluster. cluster stems can hardly support the bird so it ends up
upside down feeding like a parrot.

this has been observed for the past several years. as the result of wine
making there is a giant sized elder (now) tree beside the front deck.

this feeding behavior has been observe by 2 of my friends at other locations
- different birds in each case. plant blue elderberries near your house and
wait. also red-breasted sapsuckers feed out blue elderberries as well. whl
