My experience with Pileated Woodpeckers in more urban areas is that they
require at least a few large snags.Seward Park seems a natural place for
them. They seem to prefer conifers, but are also found in mixed
deciduous-coniferous areas. I saw a pair last week in Kelsey Creek Park (near
the farm) in Bellevue - a pretty marginal place for them. Most of the park is
pretty manicured, but there are some small, wetland areas with snags which
haven't been mowed or pruned. What I don't know is whether they are finding
nesting cavities in areas such as these.
