>WILDLIFE RESEARCH ASSISTANT -- SEASONAL
>PASSERINE BIRD STUDIES
>NORTHERN ARIZONA UNIVERSITY
>
>NAU School of Forestry needs 4 assistants for studies on passerine birds in
>northern Arizona. Each of the 3 projects study how bird abundance,
>reproduction, and foraging behavior relate to forest conditions (e.g.,
>treatments that restore ponderosa pine to presettlement conditions,
>abundance of certain habitat elements, or stand size and tree condition in
>aspen stands). Depending on the job, work begins April 15-May 10, and
>continues through mid- to late-July 1997.
>
>Job Duties:
>Conduct point counts of passerine birds in forested areas. Find and observe
>nests to determine reproductive success of focal species. Record
>observations of foraging by birds in focal species. Use standard forestry
>tools to measure vegetation. Use map and compass to determine your position
>in the field.
>
>General Information:
>Duration: April 15 or May 10 through late July 1997. 10 days on, 4 days off.
>Salary: $6.50 to 7.50/hour (depending on skill & experience), full-time
>except when weather precludes work.
>Housing is NOT provided for the 2 positions based in Flagstaff.
>Two positions will be based at Mt. Trumbull, near the north rim of the Grand
>Canyon, 60 miles by dirt road from the nearest phone in the village of
>Fredonia. This remote site is close to spectacular canyon country. Housing
>is provided in a bunkhouse (flush toilets, full kitchen); food is also
>provided. You will be part of a 3-person crew, and may have to share the
>bunkhouse with researchers on other projects. Do not consider this job
>unless you can tolerate remote, isolated conditions.
>Summer temperatures are pleasant (highs usually below 85 F) in all study areas.
>
>Minimum Qualifications:
>Excellent ability to identify forest birds by sight and sound. Your
>references must attest to this ability.
>Excellent map and compass skills.
>Valid driver's license.
>(Mt. Trumbull only) Willingness to work in a remote, isolated area.
>
>Preference Factors:
>1. Related field experience, with good references from previous employers,
>especially attesting to: skills in identifying bird songs, diligence in
>following detailed instructions, enthusiasm, and ability to work as part of
>a team.
>2. Willingness to use your own vehicle on forest roads for the job. Please
>state the type of vehicle you own (2- or 4-wheel drive), and whether you are
>willing to use it on the job. Employees using their vehicle on the job will
>be compensated at $0.30 per mile and must show evidence of liability
>insurance at time of hire. This is a low-priority preference factor.
>

>BE SURE TO:
>Clearly address your qualifications with respect to requirements and
>preference factors.
>Provide names, phone numbers and job titles of three (3) references who are
>familiar with your skills as a field technician. Two of these must be
>previous employers. Do not have your references send letters on your
>behalf; I prefer to talk to them directly.
>State whether you will consider working near Flagstaff, Mt. Trumbull, or both.

>them.
