Pileateds are seen regularly in the Mathews Beach/Thornton Creek area and
occasionally at the south end of Magnuson Park up on the "hill." So far I have
seen no immature/young of the year birds but breeding would not be unexpected.
It's amazing how these birds, once characterized as "shy", have adapted to the
urban habitat if there are included sufficiently large woodlots and parks with
snags and older trees.
