Jim Flynn gives me the opportunity to tell this story. One of the largest
great blue heron rookeries in the continental United States is located in the
Fountain Creek nature reserve near Colorado Springs. When a parent returns to
the nest with food, the young stand up to salute the parent, thus indicating
their interest in eating. Now Colorado Springs also hosts an AFB and fighter
jets are often in the skies overhead. A popular flight path passes over the
rookery. One spring, denizens of the nature reserve noticed that whenever a
fighter jet passed over the rookery, the little herons stood up and saluted
the plantes.

Incidentally, when last in the Springs I heard that this rookery is now
threatened by Apple Computer's proposed expansion in Colorado Springs. A
frontage road borders Fountain Creek and serves as the commuter route to
Apple Computer. Apple would like to build an overpass through the rookery to
shorten their employees commute time.
