I just heard that a rather *marked decline* of meadowlarks has been noticed
in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. I don't know how numerous they were in
this region prior to this decline, but I am curious if anyone has noticed
anything similar in western
Washington or elsewhere (even eastern Washington where I presume they remain
a common and widespread bird). I believe I have seen Western Meadowlarks
mentioned in a western Washington bird list or two recently (on Tweeters).
Perhaps, we could combine our experiences and produce a compendium of
*western* Western Meadowlark habitats. The Mima Mounds in Thurston County
is the western Washington location that I think of though I haven't seen
them there for at least a few years (not that I have worked at it).
