This morning at 7:30, I was rudely awakened from my mid-winter break
sleep-in by an amazingly loud rat-a-tat-tat on the nearest exterior wall.

I have never had a woodpecker woking on my house before! Aren't they
happy
with the suet I provide? Did one observe me last night and vow revenge?

They just like to make noise, trying to impress the lady flickers, I
guess. When I lived in Ocean Shores the Flickers loved to hammer on my
metal chimney in the wee hours of the morning. It made the most wonderful
noise. (For them, not for me.)

If anyone is still reading, I have a mystery bird for you. It was the
size and shape of an Evening Grosbeak with that big conical bright yellow
bill, but the bird was mottled black and yellow with no sign of white on
the wings. It flew to the top of a tree across the street, stayed about
five minutes, then flew on, making a very quick bee-line southeast. Any
ideas?
