Although I don't use it to find "rare" or "trophy" birds, I use a book called
<Where the birds are> all the time. ( I can't think of it without singing
the title to the music of a certain 60s era popular song).
Since we travel a lot, I look up the particulars on the closest wildlife
refuge to plan my Saturday stay-over. If I have a choice of places to go, I
will look up which offers birds I haven't seen, or has a special features.
It has detailed maps in some cases that can get us out and birding when we
only have a few hours around an airport. I checked it out of the library
before I bought it.
