Columbia Estuary Report - 2/23/97

Andrew Emlen (3 houses down from me) had a RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD at
his feeder on Thursday, Feb 20.

There was still one SNOWY OWL at the shorebird flats, SJCR on Saturday.
A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was also in the area.

The warm sunny weather has got everybody singing. RED CROSSBILLS were
especially vocal at Ft Columbia on the Washington side of the river.
CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEES were actively checking nest sites. Two
PILEATED WOODPECKERS were in the area and HAIRY WOODPECKERS were
drumming. For those of you interested wildflowers, WOOD VIOLETS,
SALMONBERRY, and SPRING BEAUTY have all begun to bloom.

A blue collared CANADA GOOSE (A.16) was in a flock of 60 on Chinook
Valley Rd. Two flocks of around 200 each were flying north over my house
later in the day.
