Jim, on another list I subscribe to this problem has been discussed at length.
Apparently the people who are "sending" attachments may not even be aware of it
and may not be able to avoid it when using their Reply feature. On my Compuserve
e-mail, I see the gobbledegook but am able to scroll past it with no problem.

Maybe if you post directly to the people whose mail does this and ask them to
create new messages instead of replying to old ones, the attachments would go
away. I always create new messages when posting because I don't want my subject
line to read "Digest # whatever." On another list where I don't use the digest
form, my Reply feature sends my post only to the individual originator, not to
the list. E-mail softwares seem to differ quite a bit.
