Hello, this is Portland Audubon's Rare Bird Report. This recording was made
Thursday February 27. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls at
233-3976.

The Yaquina Bay KING EIDER continues to be seen. Recently it was up the bay
toward the Hatfield Marine Science Center docks. The SNOWY OWL is still in
the dunes south of the South Jetty of Yaquina Bay, and at least one is
still at the South Jetty of the Columbia River.

The EMPEROR GOOSE is still on the Sandy River at Lewis and Clark State Park
east of Portland. Another was seen last week-end at Hunter Creek, just
south of Gold Beach. A WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was also there, and a SNOW GOOSE
was Euchre Creek a few miles to the north.

RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS moved northward along the coast during the week with
many sightings reported. The first bird reached Astoria by February 20. An
early bird was in Portland February 24. Others were reported from Grants
Pass and Sutherlin.

TREE SWALLOW and TURKEY VULTURE sightings increased during the week with
five VULTURES over Dallas February 22. VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS continue
scarce.

A fresh dead HORNED PUFFIN was on the beach south of Yaquina Bay February
25. Offshore birding from coastal headlands continues very slow.

An EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL continues to be seen among the swarm of
GREEN-WINGEDS at the pellet plant meadow on Sauvie Island. Good numbers of
gulls are still gathered there. An OSPREY was at Coon Point on the Island
February 25. Good numbers of SANDHILL CRANES and BALD EAGLES are still
being seen. A GREAT EGRET was near Wilsonville February 22.

A SURF SCOTER has been at E.E. Wilson SWA north of Corvallis since February
20. The wintering SAY'S PHOEBE is still being seen there. The Peoria BLACK
PHOEBE is also still being seen. On February 26 a FERRUGINOUS HAWK was
north of Bellfountain, northeast of Finley NWR.

The ROSS' GOOSE, WHITE PELICAN, and WHITE-TAILED KITES are still being seen
about Fern Ridge Reservoir. The Greenhill Road HARRIS' SPARROW was seen
again February 22. The 28 GREATER YELLOWLEGS seen at Fern Ridge Reservoir
over the week-end may have been part of a small shorebird movement passing
through the state during the week.

SANDHILL CRANES are stopping at Camas Swale, between Goshen and Creswell
this spring. This is a historic resting stop for these birds. Many were
reported during the week flying northward over the Willamette Valley.

The GREAT-TAILED GRACKLE was Malheur NWR Headquarters February 23, along
with the HARRIS' SPARROW and a BOHEMIAN WAXWING.
