In case Tweeters might be interested, the Journey North program has heated up
again with weekly incoming reports on everything that migrates: whales, monarch
butterflies, birds, caribou. This program is geared for school kids and allows
them to communicate with the experts and the researchers who are tracking
critters by satellite, etc. The kids also get challenge questions that they are
encouraged to try to answer and the best answers are posted later on the list.
This year there are messages in Spanish from people working with the monarch
butterfly reserves in Mexico, or working with the residents who live near the
reserves (whose burgeoning numbers threaten to crowd out the butterflies).
If you are interested e-mail Elizabeth Donnelly at edonnelly at jriver.jriver.com.
They also have a website at http://www.ties.k12.mn.us/~jnorth/
I couldn't get that website to work on my software last season and haven't tried
it yet this year. It would cause a General Protection Fault.
