I agree with the suggestion to buy a copy of Terry McEneaney's "The
Birder's Guide to Montana." Using it a few years ago, we found
Chestnut-collared Longspurs at Benton NWR near Great Bend--perching on
fences-- and McCown's Longspurs a little northwest of there--in overgrazed
fields with sparse, short grass.
