Subject: Foster Islan herons

Jane Stewart asked a few days ago about the tree full of herons on Foster
Island. They gather there every year around this time, before the nesting
season. I've seen and photographed up to a dozen together; the number
changes from day to day, and hour to hour. If you're patient (and warmly
dressed) enough, you can see fascinating instances of courtship behavior -
approaches, stretches, feather erection, stripping and offering branches,
etc. Mostly, though, they'll be hunched down into the most compact
possible shapes, trying to endure the cold, just like us...
