Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Report. This recording
was made Thursday January 2. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls

The Yaquina Bay KING EIDER continues to float in the channel below the
Highway Bridge in Newport. A RED PHALAROPE was in that area December 26.

The COMMON GRACKLE is still being seen among the blackbird flocks along the
Tumalo/Deschutes Highway east of Tumalo.

The BLUE JAY continues to be seen in the Cascade Park section of Vancouver,
Washington.

A first winter plumaged male TUFTED DUCK was found on the December 29 count
along Oak Island Road on Sauvie Island. A female TUFTED was at Ridgefield
NWR that day.

SNOWY OWLS are still being reported from the South Jetty of the Columbia
River, from the Bayocean Spit at Tillamook Bay, at the South Jetty of the
Siuslaw River, and from the Salem Airport.

A HARRIS' SPARROW was recorded on the December 30 Port Orford count, along
with a MOUNTAIN CHICKADEE, a NORTHERN SHRIKE, and a PALM WARBLER. Two SORAS
were also noted.

In additon to the TUFTED DUCKS the Sauvie Island count also recorded a TREE
SWALLOW along Rentenaar Road, two GLAUCOUS GULLS at the Pellet Plant, and a
RED-BREASTED MERGANSER on Vancouver Lake.

A HARRIS' SPARROW is now coming to a feeder in Beaverton. If interested in
seeing the bird contact John and Cindy Lawes at 503-626-7532. A wild GOLDEN
EAGLE visited the captive eagles at the Washington Park Zoo in Portland
January 1. There are still several GREAT EGRETS in the Portland-Sauvie
Island area.

A third winter GLAUCOUS GULL was seen December 26 just east of Rickeall in
Polk County. The Dallas count found many birds of prey, some PIPITS, and
COWBIRDS.

The BLACK PHOEBE continues to be seen at the Peoria Bible Church southeast
of Corvallis. A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen along Belts Drive in
Brownsville for the December 29 count there. Two SAY'S PHOEBES and a
MOUNTAIN CHICKADEE were also found.

A TURKEY VULTURE was recorded on the December 29 Eugene count. Three
RED-THROATED LOONS were near Fern Ridge Reservoir, and the CATTLE EGRET was
still at Alvadore January 1.

The Rogue Valley count last week-end found 19 WHITE-TAILED KITES, 12 BLACK
and 4 SAY'S PHOEBES, seven SORAS, 16 GREATER and one LESSER YELLOWLEGS,
also a WILSON'S WARBLER and 117 PIPITS.

Six TREE SPARROWS and a SHORT-EARED OWL were near Antone in Wheeler County
December 30. Two GREATER and one LESSER YELLOWLEGS were found on the
December 26 Summer Lake count. The December 30 Adel count in southeastern
Lake County noted four LAPLAND LONGSPURS among a flock of HORNED LARKS.

Most of the Christmas Counts taken so far report lower than normal results,
with birds smaller than Starlings being especially scarce. Several counts
will be taken this week-end, including Hood River and Yaquina Bay on
Saturday, and Corvallis and Coquille Valley on Sunday.

Tuesday January 7 is Birder's Night at Portland Audubon. Meet in Audubon
House at 7:30PM for the latest birding news and catch up on results of some
of the local Christmas Counts.
