On Saturday at the locks I saw the goldeneyes, cormorants (busily working
the spillway), mergansers and coots (working farther down in the smooth
water), a plastic owl, and my favorite sighting: a (Western?) gull trying
to swallow a starfish. It had three spiny arms hanging out of its mouth,
and after several minutes eventually did succeed in choking them down.
